__

A few days ago, for the umpteenth time, I watched in the news that Portugal is the European country with the highest rate of depression. And once again, I could not help but bitterly smile...
Not that depression is reason for smiling, no. I know people who have been through that and when it is really there, it is devastating. Let it be clear that I understand that before I proceed with this article. But it seems to me that the real reason for such dramatic rates is of a different nature...
Every day, people who complain to a doctor of some physical ailment, after a couple of customary tests so that the physician can claim that they did their duty, the cause not being immediately obvious, what the good doctor does is stuffing the patient's complaints into two convenient bottomless bags where you can fit everything medicine can't explain. One of those bags is called stress and its brother is depression. And so, in order that the Portuguese doctor's pride is not wounded by admitting, with the humility that would best become them, that they don't know what the problem is, they diagnose the patient as depressed - stressed, at best - drowns them in anxiety agents and antidepressants which not only don't make them better but also don't stop them from getting worse because that wasn't the problem to begin with and contributes to the rate, in my view deceivingly growing, of depression in Portugal.
