THE ABANDONED HOUSE Chapter III (TEMPORARY)

III
.
Ema refused to give up the pleasure of transforming the house herself. Taking advantage of that fact that she had taken some time off from work, they bought the materials they needed and set themselves to work. Ema was the most devoted one; after all, it was her dream, but Daniel helped in whatever he could, although his holidays were over.
They decided to keep the bookcase in the library and the table in the dining room. But they let the bed and chest of drawers go, because they wanted to give a more personal touch to the bedrooms. Ema wrote a letter do the previous owners, asking if they would like their books back. Maybe they hadn’t remembered them when they decided to sell the house with everything in it. She was delighted when they replied that they would very much like the young couple to have them.
After a major clean-up which took almost two weeks, they painted the inside and the outside in pastel colours. Then, they waited for the arrival of the furniture they had chosen, which happened shortly afterwards. What took more time was repairing the plumbing, but eventually they got that done too. As soon as the house was habitable, Ema and Daniel moved in. Then, Daniel started to fix the garden. He didn’t remove any trees or plants; he just trimmed them a little, so they wouldn’t look so inhospitable. To the natural vegetation of the area, which seemed to grow without any human intervention, he added some colourful flowers to balance the landscape, making it less gloomy.
When everything was ready, they invited they’re families and closest friends to a dinner party. They were congratulated on the excellent purchase and especially for the redecoration. When the evening was over and the final guests had left, Daniel sat on the sofa and Ema sat idly on his lap and smiled, pleased and proud. Daniel kissed her and said: «Congratulations. You managed to give life to this old house. I’m proud of you».
